We took a trip up Bells Line of Road to go fruit picking. There are a number of orchards you can visit with most of them offering the opportunity to pick your own fruit. Apples are the main draw card in Bilpin but most of them don't ripen until later in the season (around late Feb to March). Also available from most Orchards is fresh apple juice, apple cider and a great selection of other apple products (like fresh homemade apple pies!).
As the Hawkesbury Farmgate Trail passes though Bilpin, there are also many providores with fresh produce such as vegetables, jams and preserves, specialty honeys and much more! Make sure you take your hat, sunscreen and plenty of drinking water during the hotter summer months as the temperature can climb quite high. Before you take a trip up, check the websites of the various orchards, they will give you details of opening hours and what fruit is available for picking. It is definitely a worthwhile day out and the kids will love picking fresh fruit!
Suitable ages: All Ages. We visited the orchards last year with an infant in a pram. We did take the rugged terrain pram, as you are walking down corridors of fruit trees and there are no 'paths' to use. We did take a stroller this year and although it was a bit difficult to push, it wasn't impossible to take it through the orchards.
Cost: Prices vary from orchard to orchard. Some charge a fee to enter and then will charge per kilo/unit of fruit or vegetables picked. Others will charge an entry fee which can be deducted off any purchases you make. The prices of the fruits and vegetables can vary throughout the season. We found that the prices were either slightly lower or roughly on par with what you would pay at a supermarket. It is more about the experience of picking fruit fresh from the tree (believe me you can taste the freshness) than buying cheaper fruit and veg.
What to take: hat, sunscreen, water, comfortable clothes and shoes, reusable shopping bags (some orchids don't provide plastic bags).
We love visiting Bilpin Springs Orchard.
